In June of this year, Tee Talent was very PROUD! After some negotiations, Jazz Aviation hired us to make their t-shirts for the pride parade 2018, that was going to happen in Halifax. Jazz Aviation is well knows as an inclusive company that celebrates diversity as one of their strength. We interviewed Erica Fuhr, Diversity & Inclusion Manager of Jazz Aviation. Take a look.
1: What is Jazz Aviation?
Jazz Aviation is the largest regional airline in Canada and operates approximately 700 flights each day to 78 destinations in Canada and the U.S. Jazz has a workforce of approximately 4,600 employees.
2: Why did Jazz Aviation decide to put diversity and inclusion as a priority?
For Jazz, diversity is not a program. It is core to the makeup of our employees and our business. In order to be a leader in our industry and to have a competitive advantage, Jazz celebrates differences and values the uniqueness that each individual has to offer. Meeting the needs of our diverse passengers is critical to our success and we recognize the importance of a workforce that is reflective of the communities we serve. By optimizing the strengths of our employees, we believe we ultimately strengthen our team.
3: Jazz Aviation is listed as one of Canada's Best Diversity Employers, how does this status impact hiring?
In order to be an industry leader, we need to attract the best talent to continue to ensure our success. The best talent includes people from all backgrounds, perspectives and abilities. We want to increase the diversity of our workforce and provide fair opportunities for all people to join our team and contribute their respective skills. We recognize that in order to recruit and retain top diverse talent it is critical to have inclusive environments that support individual uniqueness. Being named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers consecutively for the last seven years confirms for us that we continue to evolve and challenge ourselves to improve. This helps us to stand out in a competitive industry as a leader in workplace diversity and inclusion.
4: What initiatives do you have in place for individuals with disabilities?
We have an Accommodation Policy with a Health Services team to support employees with disabilities and work with our employees and managers on workplace accommodations and modified work programs. We have a number of specific initiatives in place, for example, we have a Pilot Wellness Committee which supports pilots with chronic health conditions and disabilities. Jazz also has a connection with ‘The Work Bridge’ in our head office location, regarding the employment of persons with disabilities. Our corporate website is WCAG 2.0 Level AA compliant. Jazz was proud to participate in the launch of Autism Aviators in Halifax, which is designed to ease the travel process for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. In May 2017, for our ‘Take Your Kids to Work Day’ program in Halifax, we invited students with hearing impairment from Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority to learn about aviation careers.
5: Why did you decide to purchase your t-shirts from Tee Talent?
Tee Talent reached out to Jazz to offer us an opportunity to support their organization and fill a need, which was to order shirts for our employees who walk in the Halifax Pride Parade. We felt that the mission and values of Tee Talent aligned with our own. Jazz recognizes that to be a leader in diversity, we must proactively support and participate in the communities that we serve. Jazz will endeavour to not only advance within our organization but to be a responsible corporate citizen as well.
