Talent Showcase: Vinicios Sardi

January 15, 2018

New posting! Today we are showcasing Vinicios Sardi, a skateboarder from Brazil. Check out what he shared with us.

Q: Talk a little bit about your disability.

A: I was born with a bad congenital formation in the legs and in the right hand, but it was not due to external factors like remedies or problems in pregnancy, it was something of mine, in the formation of the cells.

Q: How did the skateboard appear in your life?

A: Since I was a kid, I always liked skateboarding. I found the maneuvers and aerials so cool, but I had never had any contact with the sport until one day, on television, I saw another handicapped person coming down the mega skate ramp in California, and that day I said: “if he can, I can as well!” After that, I purchased my first skateboard.

Q: Was the adapted skateboard your idea or were you inspired by someone?

A: There are two professional disabled skateboarders in Brazil, so definitely the idea was not mine, but the way I execute the maneuvers and move on the skateboard is different. I had to adapt in my own way to do that.

Q: What is the reaction of people when they see you on the skateboard?

A: People who have never seen me on a skateboard always look astonished and curious, because often the person who is disabled is seen as someone who cannot do “regular” activities, and I try to show the opposite, and they really enjoy watching me.

Q: What message would you give to those who have the same challenges as you and want to start skateboarding?

A: I lived a long time with shame of exposing myself to society. I realized that this is a great nonsense, and we are all unique in different ways.

The sport today has changed my life. I feel free, doing everything that I want. I often say to other people to never give up on their dreams, because the barriers are in their minds and only we can break them.
